guided tour in artemonas - folklore museum

On the first day of their arrival on the island, the groups of visitors had the opportunity to visit the village of Artemonas. Artemonas is one of the largest settlements of Sifnos and a large part of the population of Sifnos lives here. It is built amphitheatrically and is located north of Apollonia.

Walking on the main paved road, you will see a church of Panagia Kochi, which is said to have been built on the ruins of an ancient worship centre of the “Expedition” Artemis.

On the same road, there are some of the most beautiful mansions of Sifnos, with large tree gardens. In its alleys there are restaurants with traditional Sifnos flavours, small shops, confectioneries, traditional confectionery workshops, cafes, bakeries etc.

Later the guests visited the folklore museum in the village and were guided there by the student Alexandros Atsonios.

Kastro, treasure hunt game

On Tuesday, 19 Oct., all the delegations participated in a guided tour in the old village of Kastro.

20211019_171432Kastro was built on the ruins of the ancient capital of Sifnos and is the only village of the island with a strong medieval character. A big part of its boundary walls survived as well as the features of a Venetian fortress. Narrow little streets, old entrances called the lotzies, beautiful two-storey houses, superb old mansions and 16th and 17th-century churches with ornamental floors compose the incredible beauty of Kastro. 20211019_173917It offers a magnificent panoramic view of the sea and has been inhabited since the prehistoric period, as many findings coming from the various archaeological excavations testify

After that, all groups took part in a treasure hunt referred to the ways of water management now and in the past.

Vathy, pottery lab

Vathi Beach Sifnos: Vathi beach is a lovely picturesque bay lying on the southwestern side of Sifnos. This golden beach stretches for more than 1 kilometer and it is arguably one of the most beautiful areas of Sifnos for the crystalline shallow waters and an amazing surrounding of high cliffs. The most unique characteristic of Vathy is the Church of Taxiarches which stands in front of the small port.

20211019_125622-1Atsonios Handmade Ceramics under the authority of Anthony J. Atsonios has continued a tradition since 1870. In the picturesque port of Vathi of Sifnos island, Atsonios family is still operating one of the last traditional kilns and workshops.

sightseeing, dinner

The afternoon of Wednesday, October 21 was dedicated to the tour of the picturesque fishing villages and the religious monuments of the island.
We visited :
Panagia tou Vounou – The church is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin and is considered to have been built in 1813. From the courtyard of the church, we enjoyed the wonderful view of Platys Gialos and Kimolos and had the opportunity of taking beautiful group photos.
Panagia Chrysopigi,  (the patron saint of the island). The monastery, which is now inactive and its cells are available for accommodation to visitors, dominates the small cape that divides the bay of Faros into two. It was built in 1615 to house the image of Zoodochou Pigi which was saved by fishermen from the sea.
At the end of a very pleasant and easy hike, walk through the picturesque fishing village of Faros visitors ended up at the old monastery of Holy Cross. There the Greek hosts offered the dinner with traditional dishes of Sifnos (chickpeas soup -“revythada” – and lamb baked in the wood-fired oven – “mastelo”)

hiking in "natura"

The Archaeological Site of Agios Andreas was found at the top of a hill on the way to Vathy from Apollonia. The ancient town unearthed here was Mycenaean. The most important finding was the Acropolis or citadel that lies on the top of the hill and is called Saint Andrew Castle.

The site is one of the best examples of Mycenaean fortifications in the Cyclades.
